Sometimes the coal seams are found as layers up to 0.9 meter thick in the mudstone of Pondaung Formation of Eocene age. The coal seam occurs along NNE-SSW striking, depending on the trending of the range of this area. The type of coal, which noted in this area, is mostly Sub-bituminous and the average calorific value is between 9500 and 11000 Btu/lb. The probable mineable coal reserve of Chindwin Basin is above 50 million metric tons.
