In the Taungni-Pingadaw area, the Irrawaddy Formation is well developed in the outer western limb of a major anticline. The Irrawaddy Formation forms a lowland area with cultivated fields capped by recent alluvium, plateau gravels and red earth. In some places bad-land topography is developed. Fossil wood fragments, vertebrate bones and shark’s teeth are commonly found in the sandstones. The stratigraphic contact between the underlying Obogon Formation and Irrawaddy Formation is placed arbitrarily, as it is generally concealed by Quaternary deposits and recent alluvium. Sands and gravels are well exposed in the survey area Nay Pyi Taw union territory.
