Because flora records clearly show temperature and climate changes on land, the shape of leaf edges is used as an indicator of paleoclimate. Regardless of the type, the leaves of tropical plants have smooth edges. In addition, the leaves are thick and often do not fall, and the tips of the leaves are shaped like water drops to allow rainwater to run off. The leaves of plants in colder, drier regions have serrated edges, are often smaller, thinner, and often deciduous.
