Galena, also called lead glance, is the natural mineral form of lead(II) sulfide (PbS). It is the most important ore of lead and an important source of silver. Galena is metallic lead gray with a bright metallic luster when freshly broken, and dark gray to black when weathered. It is brittle and very heavy (about 7.6 times as heavy as water). Galena is moderately soft with hardness varies between 2.50 and 2.75 at Mohs scale. Galena is common in the Paleozoic sulfide veins, as both fine-grained and coarse-grained material and occasionally in euhedral crystals.
