It is a fine-grained sedimentary rock composed mainly of clay, and is a generic term for clay rock, silt rock, azilite, and shale. If there is more silt than clay, it is called silt rock, and if there is more clay than silt, it is called clay rock. If fissility is visible, it is called shale, otherwise it is called mudstone.
