Central Myanmar contains Tertiary sedimentary basins rich in hydrocarbon deposits, Cretaceous granites and a calc-alkaline andesite–dacite volcanic arc forming stratovolcanoes dating from the Pliocene (Mount Popa, Taungthaulon and Loimeye). Important mineral deposits in the Wuntho–Popa Arc are copper at Monya (Mitchell et al. 2010) and gold at Kaukpatho (Ye Myint Swe et al. 2004).
