This metamorphic rock has undergone intermediate to high-grade metamorphism and exhibits a higher metamorphic grade than schist. It features well-developed gneissic banding and shows evidence of recrystallization. The foliation is less pronounced than in schist. Characteristic minerals include staurolite and biotite.
