It is a basalt in which pyroxene is observed as phenocrysts. It is a dark, mafic volcanic rock with a low SiO2 content of 45–52%. It is a fine-grained igneous rock mainly composed of plagioclase and common pyroxene, and has the same chemical composition as gabbro. It is mostly grayish black to black, fine-grained, and appears dense, but sometimes porous.
